We cater to more than just those that are disabled!
Facility or Therapy Dogs are different from Service Dogs. Whereas a Service Dog is task trained to assist one individual with a disability, a Therapy Dog is trained to comfort multiple people! They go to hospitals, retirement homes, schools, etc to make others feel better. Or, in the case of a Facility dog, they “work” at a Therapist's office, Courthouse, or sometimes a jail or correctional facility to make clients and inmates feel safer, more comfortable, ect.
These dogs don’t need as rigorous training as a service dog does, but still plays a huge role in the community! They bring joy to a lot of people!
With this program you have to provide the dog, or if you need help finding the right one, we can help refer you to breeders or temperament test a rescue dog for you.
If you get/have a puppy under 6 months old, we’ll have you join our Puppy Raisers for their weekly puppy raising class, these classes are for the first 6 months of the puppy’s life and teach all the basic puppy manners from kennel training and potty training, to teething, to making obedience the fun game we start playing. We also will begin teaching some fun behaviors that make for some fun tricks that bring a smile to a lot of people’s faces!
When the puppy reaches 6 months, its time to dive down the obedience train! We’ll begin asking more of your puppy, asking them to hold commands for longer periods of time, taking them out in public even more, and really prepping them to be an excellent Therapy Dog!
Please Note: Some locations require Therapy Dog teams to be insured, Assistance PMA does not provide that, but we highly recommend checking out Alliance of Therapy Dogs for more information on that or to meet others with your passion!
